About JISC Services

JISC funds initiatives and services to provide expertise, independent advice, guidance and resources to the UK FE and HE education sectors to promote the effective and innovative use of ICT.

JISC Services

• Archives Hub
  The Archives Hub provides online access to descriptions of archive collections held in universities and colleges throughout the UK.
• Arts and Humanities Data Service (AHDS)
  The Arts and Humanities Data Service (AHDS) is a national service funded by JISC and the Arts and Humanities Research Council to aid the creation, use and preservation of digital collections in the arts and humanities.
• Athens
  Athens is a JISC-funded service providing access to online electronic resources via a user-name and password held on a central database.
• BUFVC (British Universities Film & Video Council)
  The BUFVC (British Universities Film & Video Council) is a representative body which promotes the production, study and use of film and related media in higher and further education and research.
• Census Dissemination Unit
  Census results provide a unique and invaluable source of detailed current and historical information relating to the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of populations and households within the UK.
• Copac
  Copac provides free access to the merged catalogues of 24 major university research libraries in the UK and Ireland, plus the British Library, the National Library of Scotland, and the National Library of Wales/Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru.
• CrossFire
  CrossFire is a complete in-house chemical information solution, covering over 200 years of primary literature.
• Digimap Collections
  Services that deliver maps and map data of Great Britain.
• Digital Curation Centre (DCC)
  The purpose of our centre is to provide a national focus for research and development into curation issues and to promote expertise and good practice, both nationally and internationally, for the management of all research outputs in digital format.
• EDINA
  EDINA, based at Edinburgh University Data Library, is a JISC-funded national data centre. It offers the UK tertiary education and research community networked access to a library of data, information and research resources.
• Education Image Gallery
  A collection of 50,000 images from the Hulton Archive, Photodisc and the Getty Images® News Service (current events and sport).
• Eduserv (innovative technology services)
  Eduserv is a UK-registered charity which delivers innovative technology services (including some JISC services) to education and the public sector. With the contributions generated from these activities the Eduserv Foundation funds initiatives supporting the effective application of ICT in education.
• ESDS (Economic and Social Data Service)
  The ESDS is a national data service funded by JISC and the Economics and Social Research Council providing access and support for an extensive range of key economic and social data, both quantitative and qualitative, spanning many disciplines and themes.
• ESDS International
  ESDS International provides access and support for a range of international macro and micro data series and surveys.
• Film & Sound Online
  A set of collections of film, video and sound material.
• Hairdressing Training
  Hairdressing Training is a web-based collection of study guides covering much of the hairdressing NVQ curriculum level 2.
• Index to The Times 1790-1980
  Bibliographic references to articles from The Times newspaper comprising Palmer’s Index to The Times (covering the years 1790 to 1905), and the Official Index to The Times (1906-1980).
• Information Environment Service Registry (IESR)
  The Information Environment Service Registry has been developed to provide a registry of information about electronic resources that are of value to teachers, researchers and learners.
• Intute
  Intute is a free online service providing access to the very best web resources for education and research. The service is created by a network of UK universities and partners. Subject specialists select and evaluate the websites in its database and write high quality descriptions of the resources.
• ISI Web of Knowledge Service for UK Education
  The ISI Web of Knowledge Service for UK Education is the platform by which users can access Thomson Scientific products subscribed to by an individual institution, such as Web of Science.
• JANET
  JANET is one of the world’s leading research and education networks, operated on behalf of the combined UK Higher and Further Education Funding Councils represented by the JISC. JANET provides a highly reliable high-bandwidth network connectivity and a number of associated services to ensure UK research and education benefit from this infrastructure.
• JANET CSIRT
  JANET CSIRT is the security coordination team for the JANET network.
• JISC CETIS (JISC Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards)
  JISC CETIS advises Universities and Colleges on the strategic, technical and pedagogic implications of educational technology standards.
• JISC Collections
  JISC Collections negotiates with publishers of online resources and with owners of digital content, on behalf of further and higher education, including journals, e-books, geospatial material, learning materials and databases.
• JISC infoNet
  JISC infoNet aims to be the UK’s leading advisory service for managers in the post-compulsory education sector promoting the effective strategic planning, implementation and management of information and learning technology to support learning, teaching, research and business processes.
• JISC Legal
  JISC Legal is a free information service offering high quality legal information to further and higher education relating to the use of information and communications technologies. It runs training events, provides publications, and offers an enquiry service.
• JISC Mirror (JISC National Mirror Service)
  The JISC National Mirror Service provides the UK academic community with high-speed, highly available mirrors of free software resources that originate on remote sites.
• JISC Plagiarism Advisory Service
  The JISC Plagiarism Advisory Service provides generic advice and guidance to institutions, academics and students on all aspects of plagiarism and collusion prevention and detection. The service provides access to the TurnitinUK® detection software, and promotes the use of the software within a holistic approach to plagiarism.
• JISC RSCs (Regional Support Centres)
  The 13 JISC RSCs provide a comprehensive, regionally-based support service for the use of networked learning technologies and resources for FE Colleges, small HE Colleges and other local educational organisations.
• Jorum
  Jorum is a free online repository service for teaching and support staff in UK Further and Higher Education Institutions, helping to build a community for the sharing, reuse and repurposing of learning and teaching materials.
• JSTOR
  JSTOR is a digital archive collection of the full back runs of academic journals.
• Land, Life & Leisure
  A weekly index covering the popular press as well as scholarly journals in agriculture, countryside management, environmental change, equine studies and leisure and tourism.
• MIMAS (Manchester Information and Associated Services)
  MIMAS is a national data centre based at The University of Manchester and supported by JISC and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). MIMAS provides the UK further and higher education and research communities within networked access to key data and information resources to support teaching, learning and research across a wide range of disciplines.
• National Academic Mailing List service (JISCMail)
  JISCMail has a mission to facilitate knowledge sharing within the UK centered academic community, using email and the web, through the provision, support and development of specialist mailing list based services, enabling the delivery of high quality and relevant content.
• Netskills (Training - Accreditation - Consultancy - Development)
  Netskills provides high quality training and staff development. It helps institutions make effective use of technology for teaching and learning, research, administration, marketing and other activities.
• OSS Watch
  OSS Watch (open source software advisory service promotes awareness and understanding of the legal, social, technical and economic issues that arise when educational institutions engage with free and open source software. It does this by providing unbiased advice and guidance to UK higher and further education.
• Satellite Image Data Service
  The Satellite Image Data Service is a unique spatial data resource which can be used for a wide range of applications within many disciplines.
• SUNCAT
  SUNCAT, a serials union catalogue for the UK, for locating serials held in UK libraries.
• TASI (Technical Advisory Service for Images)
  TASI provides advice and guidance on the creation and use of digital image collections in learning, teaching and research. TASI aims to promote and develop good practice in the creation, delivery and use of digital images and in the management of digitisation projects.
• TechDis
  TechDis is the leading educational advisory service providing advice and guidance on technology and disability to promote an accessible and inclusive experience for students and staff. TechDis is a JISC Advisory Service.
• TechWatch (Technology & Standards Watch)
  TechWatch identifies and tracks developments in ICT that may have a significant impact on education institutes in a few years time.
• Text Mining Centre
  Text Mining Centre is the first publicly-funded text mining centre in the world.
• UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research
  The UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research is funded by JISC and Becta, and operated by UKERNA. The federation provides a single solution to access online resources and services for education and research.
• UK Data Archive
  The UK Data Archive (UKDA) is a national resource centre that acquires, disseminates, preserves and promotes the largest collection of digital data in the social sciences and humanities in the United Kingdom.
• UKBORDERS
  Digitised boundary datasets of the UK for teachers and researchers in the UK Higher and Further Education community to download and use in their work.
• UKOLN
  UKOLN is a centre of expertise in digital information management, providing advice and services to the library, information, education and cultural heritage communities.
• Zetoc
  Zetoc provides Z39.50-compliant access to the British Library’s Electronic Table of Contents (ETOC).
